Announced this past May was the launch of Blackberry’s limited edition 24 carat gold series of their Porsche Design Blackberry P9981, released in June. Only 25 pieces of this gold plated and leather bound smartphone were released.
Carrying the phone’s serial number and 2AA prefix code, each device is complete with a solid gold plaque located on the back. As for the mandatory code, it acts as both a part of the phone’s PIN and to inform others of the owner’s P9981 status.
Adding to the phone’s luxury, users are able to customize their keyboard to their preference of either EU spec QWERTZ, UK spec QWERTY, or an Arabic version.
Further features include a 1.5 Ghz single-core Qualcomm MSM 8655 microprocessor, 8GB of RAM, 5 MP high-tech camera, 3.1” HD touch screen, BB7 OS, and Li-ion 1000 mAh battery with a maximum talk-time of 5 hours and 30 minutes. The chassis of the gold plated Porsche Design Blackberry P9981 is constructed of stainless steel that is then further veneered in gold. Overall, the phone has a minimal and angular aesthetic.
Available internationally last June both online and through exclusive boutiques, the limited edition phones hit the market at $1,890 a pop.
