Culture: Cirque du Soleil exclusive in LA

On July 21, Cirque du Soleil will preview its new production, Iris, at its new permanent home Kodak Theatre, home of the Academy Awards. Inspired by the history of cinema, Iris is about an imaginary journey through the evolution of cinema, and what better place to perform than the “Entertainment Capital of the World.”

“We are thrilled to have found such a spectacular home in LA,” said President and CEO of Cirque du Soleil Daniel Lamarre. “The city is at the forefront not only of film, but music, architecture and art as well.”

With seventy-two performers performing the essence of dance and acrobatics combined with live video, film footage and interactive projections, Iris will conjure a place between motion and picture, and light and sound. In an effort to portray the limitless possibilities of cinema, these masterminds of illusion will constantly shift the performance between reality and make-believe. The show will cover cinema‘s entire splendor from the picturesque art form to the busy soundstage illustrating both the mechanics of cinema and its extraordinary power to deceive the eye.

Internationally acclaimed Philippe Decouflé is the writer and director of Iris, his first production with Cirque du Soleil. Decouflé is a French stage and film director, artistic director, dancer and choreographer who created the opening and closing ceremonies of the Albertville Olympic Games.

Starting with a group of 20 street performers in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is now a major Quebec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in nearly 300 cities on six continents.

Cirque du Soleil and its founder Guy Laliberté received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this fall, kicking off the preview of the LA show. The show will premiere on September 25, 2011.
