Located in the heart of the Town of Culter Bay, the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center is a wonderful community gathering place. The Center opened its doors in October 2011 and was the vision of Commissioner Dennis C. Moss in 1992 after Hurricane Andrew devastated the South Miami-Dade community. The $51 million center was funded by the office of the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of Commissioners and is managed by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs.
The Center plays a key role in the cultural, as well as economic, development of the area. The center provides a diverse range of quality entertainment, and it suitable for people of all backgrounds and all ages. The focus of the Center is educational and outreach activities through their partnerships with various community groups. The Center includes multiple rehearsal and performing spaces and offers state-of-the-art facilities for the artistic population of the area.
Designed by the Arquitectonica International, Inc., the building is meant to represent the spirit of movement. It moves patrons through both a visual and a physical experience making them performers in the experience. The interior features several works of locally-based artist,Robert Chambers. Specially for the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts center, he created a piece which he calls Light Field. This original light piece illuminates the entire translucent lobby of the center with its unique, beautiful changing designs.
Upcoming shows and ticket information can be found on the Center’s website.
