There are photographers who feel freer photographing other cities itself. But for others, like Paco Gómez (1918-1998) and Jorge Guerra (1936), the proximity to his hometown allowed near an attractive look to deepen their knowledge of world closer.
In the 11th edition of the exhibition series “Maridajes”, Bodegas Roda brings these two authors, from the collection of the Foundation Photo Colectania, to bring the public the city of San Sebastian in the late fifties seen by Paco Gómez and 1967 Lisbon through the camera of Portuguese Jorge Guerra. The exhibition can be seen at the exhibition hall of Bodegas Roda until April 30, 2013.
The Portuguese Jorge Guerra traveled throughout his life, with long stays in Angola, London and Canada but, in 1967, devoted much of their time exploring and showing Lisbon, his hometown. With a photographic style influenced by humanism dominant European photography then, that war gives it a point of risk with their unique frames, the photographer shows a gray city and in turn tender, turning a longing for their land in the portrait of its people.
Meanwhile, Paco Gómez lived and did most of his work in Madrid, but its origins were in the Basque Country, which is why for many years spent the summer in San Sebastian. The series presented in the exhibition XI Pairing is an exception in his work, usually intimate and abstract, to prove their mastery of the report. This is a people-centered document with a serene look, much like that of Jorge Guerra. In this sense, this series of Paco Gómez is an invitation to enjoy a leisurely stroll down the corners of San Sebastián.
