Entertainment: Russian avant-garde

From February 15 to March 20, 2011 you will see a special collection of Russian avant-garde works from the permanent collection of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and Carmen Thyssen collection.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum preserves the largest collection of Soviet avant-garde art in Spain. Coinciding with ARCO Contemporary Art Fair 2011, to be held in Madrid from 16 to 20 February and which has Russia as guest country, the museum will present a new installation of the collections of so-called “Russian avant-garde” in 42 rooms and 43 on the ground floor of the Palace of Villahermosa.

During the first decades of the twentieth century, imperial Russia was soon to become the Soviet Union, underwent a profound transformation of its society and an unprecedented cultural effervescence. Russian artistic life was filled with exhibitions program, switched theoretical manifestos and declarations, while numerous avant-garde movements succeeded, some derived from foreign influences, such as cubofuturismo or rayon, and other genuine new revolutionary Russia, as Suprematism and Constructivism. Museum visitors can familiarize themselves with all these moves through a set of thirty-five works by such iconic artists as Chagall, Larionov, Goncharova, Stepanova, Popova, Kliun, Lissitzky or Kandinsky.
