Fashionistas across the world eagerly awaited the first glimpse of Catherine Middleton on her wedding day, to end speculation about who had been chosen as the lucky dress designer and about what style she had chosen.
Within seconds of her stepping into her car at The Goring Hotel in London to make the journey to Westminster Abbey, the designer was revealed as Sarah Burton, Creative Director of Alexander McQueen. A view from the television just didn’t do this dress’ exquisite lace and detailing justice. However, you can now view the dress and her accompanying jewelery (including the 1936 Cartier ‘Halo’ tiara loaned by the Queen) on display at Buckingham Palace. It’s a real treat for Royalists and fashion-lovers alike.
The body of the strapless dress is a Victorian inspired corset; pulling the dress in at the waist. Lace on the arms and body, veil and trim of the skirt was handmade by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace; and it’s intricacy and detail needs to be seen first-hand to be believed.
The Summer opening of Buckingham Palace’s State Rooms to the public has now begun, and runs until 3rd October. Tickets cost £17.50 for adults; with concessions available for students, children and the over-60s. Visits include touring the State Rooms, Garden, Faberge exhibition and the Royal Wedding display.
