Even the sudden (and we hope temporary) demise of Van Heusen Men’s Week did not deter Sanchita Ajjampur’s enthusiasm this season, as the Bengaluru-based designer interspersed her colourful Fall/Winter 2013 line with sleek camouflage prints and masculine leather influences to define the urban alpha male. Traditional prints and textures that have been inspired by military and Indian mythology merge with modern metallic details on the pockets to deliver lightweight clothing (aviator and parachute fabrics have been used) that is matched with gladiator sandals and brogues alike. The entire look has been finished with chic, soft helmet hats.
Ajjampur’s women’s collection weaves a plethora of bright colours and bejewelled forest scenes from the Panchatantra tales that quirkily includes a slew of animals such as fierce crocodiles and cheeky monkeys, alongside glossy ravens and clever jackals. Hand-painted florals rub shoulders with furry and feathery fabrics, while crystal-set accessories complement the tapered, layered ensembles. While stiffer fabrics such as taffeta have been used, the designer’s mainstays – leather and jerseys – are also significant in this collection that blurs the lines between daywear and eveningwear.
