Art & Culture: Aristotelian inquiries and art

Taking a cue from Greek philosopher Aristotle’s principal works – Metaphysica, and working on the premise that all individuals interpret reality as a products of their experiences and perceptions, fashion designers Rohit Khanna and Rahul Gandhi and Arjun Sawhney recently put together a unique art exhibition titled ‘2+ 2 = 5 – When the Sum is Greater than the Parts’, which sought to examine the inner workings of an artist’s mind – moving from the definitive singular to the wider universe.

While each artist has interpreted this curated effort in his or her signature manner (with a distinct significance on its own), taken together, the meaning may change or takes on a complete, holistic identity. Chintan Upadhyay’s work, for example, consists of many small elements that layer together to give a sense of the lapse between the contemporary and the traditional. Exploring the genesis of life, Sonia Mehra Chawla’s work is composed of several small canvases brought together. While T.V.Santosh’s attempts to pose eternal questions about the complex implications of war and terror, Gigi Scaria’s work is an attempt to chronicle our movement away from different knowledge systems that we have compiled and relied on over centuries, towards a new order of knowledge that is lightweight and wireless.

Some of the other artists whose works are on display includeMithu Sen, Pooja Iranna, Aishwarya Sultania, Amitabh Kumar, Anjum Singh, Jitish Kallat, Manjunath Kamath, Manisha Parekh, and Shivani Aggarwal amongst others.
