If you’re heading to New York City this summer, don’t miss the second edition of Sculpture Park at Frieze New York, that overlooks the East River, in Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan. Come May 10–13, 2013 and this verdant park opens its gates to large, open-air sculptures by internationally recognized artists, that are a visual treat for visitors and locals alike ‒ the first such art fair on Randall’s Island.
Last year saw 45,000 visitors to the Park. This year, new work done by participating artists for the 2013 Sculpture Park include Paul McCarthy’s Balloon Dog (2013), an 80-foot-high inflatable work, as well as pieces from Fiona Connor, Style Guide Spa (2013); Saint Clair Cemin, Fotini (2013); Martha Friedman, _ Amygdalas_ (2013); and Nick Van Woert, Primitive (2013). Also on show will be works by artists Tom Burr, Tom Friedman,Andreas Lolis, Charles Long, Jason Meadows, Pae White, and Franz West. Works from over 180 of the world’s leading galleries will be on display.
The Frieze Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover in 2003 in London. It has curated the Frieze Art Fair in London, and later, the Sculpture Park at Frieze London. New York is the most international art fair Frieze has ever produced, and this year has a strong emphasis on India, Asia and the Middle East. Artists from India include Hemali Bhuta, Nikhil Chopra, Baptist Coelho, Mahesh Baliga, and Sarnath Banerjee.
Speaking on the programme this year, Sculpture Park at Frieze New York curator Tom Eccles has this to say: ‘Building upon the success of last year, our aim for this new edition is to increase the ambition of the Sculpture Park programme both in scope and scale. Placed in an exceptional location, the programme will continue expanding visitors’ experience by displaying large outdoor sculptures in dialogue with ephemeral pieces. Both physical objects and works that help define our experience of the park itself, a space that offers both bucolic and urban conditions.’
