Art & Culture: Gallery Espace

One of India’s leading privately owned commercial art galleries, Gallery Espace was established in Delhi in 1989 with a solo show of M. F. Husain’s works. Espace is credited for many firsts in the Indian art scene over the last 20 years. Efforts through the early and mid 1990s were concentrated on anticipating trends, spotting latent talent and giving a much-needed platform to many talents (Subodh Gupta- Group Show (1991), Solo Show (1993), Ashim Purkayasta – Young Contemporaries (1995), Solo Show (1999) – some artists who today rank amongst the most prolific of the younger generation. Espace has organized some of the earliest curated exhibitions and showcased mediums and materials such as sculptures and drawings that lacked patronage as early as 1994-95.

Primarily built around the vision of its director, Renu Modi, the endeavour has been to represent artists whose work deals with issues reflecting contemporary society’s concerns and documents today’s reality. Espace has also ventured into representing Indian art at international forums by participating in premier art fairs like Asian Contemporary Art Fair, New York (Nov 07), Art Dubai (Mar 07, 08), ARCO-Madrid (Feb 09) and India Art Summit (Aug 08, Aug 09), to name a few.
