Art & Culture: Vintage inspiration

Titled ‘Magnetism,’ Vijay Sharma’s exhibition of paintings at Studio Art is remarkable simply because it uses objets d’art as subjects. Sharma, vividly enamoured with the beauty of antiques once used by royals in Rajasthan, has created a series of images rendered in a stylistic manner with precision and a sense of veracity but which don’t appear to be within the realms of absolute reality. Sharma’s presentations of simple objects in a monumental scale with meticulous detailing make them appear grand. This magnified depiction of that object suggests the extent of the artist’s desire and the subject’s importance in his life.

Being from Rajasthan – the land of colour, Vijay’s predilection is evident for bright and snazzy colours. The artist’s inspiration from miniatures is also apparent in his artworks, particularly in the depiction of the protagonist that is always bigger in size as compared to others to show the character’s importance and the fine rendering of details to adorn his character also makes it quite evident. Sharma’s art combines elements from miniature paintings, contemporary objects, personal memory, dreams and fantasies.

Check out ‘Magnetism,’ at Studio Art, on till 31st August.
