Mathieu Lustrerie has been creating, reproducing and restoring bronze and crystal chandeliers, sconces and lamps for more than half-a-century. Founded in 1948, Regis Mathieu, son of founder Henri Mathieu, now sits at the helm of the company. Lustreries creations over the years have adorned some of the most well-known buildings in the world including the Château de Versailles (Hall of Mirrors), Philadelphia Hall of Music, Opera Garnier in Paris, Opera Garnier in Monaco, Farnesse Palace in Rome (Italy), Cosmos Club in Washington among others. And as a final stamp of approval when it comes to the style quotient, the fashion houses of Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Cartier, Hermès and Christian Dior worldwide have also embellished the interiors of their offices with Lustreries creations.
The process of creation, reproduction and/or restoration for each piece, begins at the workshop in Gargas, France. Located alongside the workshop, a 2000 square foot museum is Regis personal homage to art, beauty and the splendid craftsmanship that the art of lighting demands. A two storied haven for art lovers, it captures the Mathieu Lustrerie masterpieces in all their grandeur. The upper level showcases Regis Mathieus personal collection of chandeliers that comprise of 250 remarkable pieces. The collection is a plethora of historic relics as well as contemporary pieces from the XVth Century till today, and the exhibits seem to tell the story of how chandelier-making has evolved through the years.
The ground level, on the other hand, hosts their stock of crystals and welcomes their clients antique chandeliers for restoration. While restoring or duplicating antique chandeliers, the team strivesto employ the same methods and techniques used to create the original piece, in an effort to present as close a likeness to, and to maintain the essence of, the original piece.
At Mathieu Lustrerie, it is of the utmost importance to provide the finest in quality and luxury. All the components of each opulent creation are hand-made. After the raw materials are procured, each component is shaped, designed and made by Mathieu Lustrerie craftsmen. Every single crystal used is hand chiseled by a member of the team, making each piece created at the workshop inimitable.
Each Mathieu Lustrerie piece is made to suit the needs and requirements of the client. Every single detail is taken into consideration, such as whether the product is meant for use in the daytime or at night, or for a particular ceremony. The pieces are customized to fit the needs of the client as well the venue where they will be showcased.
A Mathieu Lustrerie stamp is embossed and a unique serial number is provided for each of itscreations. This helps in maintaining a timeline for each product and tracking it. Additionally, this also helps in cataloging each piece and all its features, making it easier to recall the creation process for each of them.
India apparently happens to be a great source of inspiration to Regis. He has a family home in Chattarpur (Delhi) which he often uses when in need of a fresh perspective. Surrounded by acres of greenery and tranquility, this house provides the perfect environment for Regis to create new designs, ideate and innovate.
