Deco: Pop Goes The Mughal

Avant-garde interior and product designer Mozez Singh’s latest collection of furniture, Mughal Pop has recently appeared at Good Earth’s New Delhi store (it was launched last year in Mumbai). The pieces are inspired by Mughal motifs and architecture that have been given a modern, contemporary twist. They are fashioned out of clear, frosted or colourful acrylic, which is popular aboard, infused with an old-world charm, and encrusted with a 100 or so types of semi-precious stones. One of the pieces entitled ‘Akbar is a Star’ won the EDIDA award for Best Furniture Design in 2012. According to Singh, no era was as grand as the Mughal era: “I wanted to take this really rich historical period, and make it very now,” says the line-producer of Pitt-Jolie starrer A Mighty Heart, and producer of Peddlers and White Noise. Mughal Pop pieces are priced between Rs 25,000 – Rs 1.5 lakh. As for Singh, he debuts as director in a feature film that hits the floors at the end of this year. Definitely something to cheer about.
