Gourmet & Nightlife: Daniell's Tavern's new Avataar

Revisiting and reviving the legendary opulence of the culinary tradition of India, Daniell’s Tavern at The Imperial has created a new look and menu, reflecting the travels of famous British landscape artists, Thomas and William Daniell.

In 1786, the uncle and nephew duo started work in Calcutta. Travelling along the Ganges as far as Kanpur, they visited the Mughal cities of Agra and Delhi. Before returning home, they also visited Lucknow, Madras, Mysore and Bombay. The outcome of the fascinating travels that the Daniells had embarked upon, resulted in Oriental Scenery, a collection of 144 sceneries, many of which are now displayed at Tavern.

The new avataar of the restaurant showcases the original lithographs by the Daniells. Noteworthy among them is the lithograph of the Jantar Mantar monument painted from the exact spot where the Daniell’s Tavern stands today.

The recipes from Daniells’ diaries, also reflects the influence of the journey on the two artists. The new menu offers delicacies like Governer Howell’sorder- silvers of sole fillet, marinated with Bengali mustard and lightly cooked on a griddle, William’s Delight - light tomato broth flavoured with coriander and Moghul’s Pride - mace scented skewers of lamb mince delicately charred in a clay oven.
