Gourmet & Nightlife: Gunpowder: New Delhi's New Hot Spot

After quitting his last job of 15 years, Satish Warier no long wanted to be an editor/web producer for India’s biggest newspapers and magazines. Instead he formed a rock band and opened his very own restaurant known as ‘Gunpowder’.

Very quickly this restaurant became the hottest new dining venue as it received rave reviews in almost every magazine and website. Gunpowder stands out admits all the fussy and flashy five-star hotels because the aesthetic is very casually cool. The atmosphere is chill and relaxed and the vibe is unlike anywhere else in New Delhi. An added bonus, the food is serious and the service is skilled. The menu is seasonal and is limited to the six states of India’s southern cone.

At Gunpowder they do not cook in bulk or cut corners so each dish has a very distinct array of flavors. I suggest ordering “Kerala” which is made with lots of chili and tomato and is very dense in flavor. Not surprisingly Gunpowder is always full because there is only a limited 30 seats. On that note, go early and work up an appetite by walking through the neighborhood and taking a look at some of the chic boutiques nestled there. If possible, ask for a seat on the terrace because those will give you an expansive view of a medieval reservoir and will surely take your breath away.
