Travel: Neemrana Fort Palace

William Shakespeare once said, What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other word would smell as sweet? Likewise, the USP of Neemrana Hotels is not in their name. Known for being a non hotel for over two decades now, the Neemrana Fort-Palace was once a ruined 15th century fort in Rajasthan.

Bought for 7 lakhs in 1991, Aman Nath and Francis Waciarg, as co-chairmen turned the historic wreck into a flagship hotel (non-hotel as they claim it), now a hit amongst Indians and foreigners alike. It is not for nothing that Neemrana was selected for the 2004 Aga Khan Award for restorative re-use of the fort and won the 2000 Intach-Satte award for restoration and tourism for being the foremost example of how architectural treasures  can be uplifted from the national dustbin.

Neemrana Fort-Palace has 55 rooms/suites and rampart gardens. An additional wing houses the pool and health spa, an amphitheatre, the hanging gardens with a salon, a restaurant with a roof-top garden and conference rooms and many special suites. The group today has 17 properties across the country, all of which are heritage sites that have been restored.
