Watches: Celebrating 100 Years of Timekeeping

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of their first tonneau-shaped watch-they first digressed from the traditional round shape to adopt or barrel-shaped cases in 1912-Vacheron Constantin has released four new watches of the same shape as a part the Malte collection.

Vacheron Constantin needs no introduction in the world of horology. What was started two and a half centuries ago by Jean-Marc Vacheron as a small watch workshop, is now one of the most important names in the science of watch making. Since the start, Vacheron has been known for the classic blend of mechanics and form and the tonneaushape has been associated over the century with the most prestigious horological complications, interpreted in particular through the Malte collection, first introduced by the company in 2000. The watches called Malte Tourbillon, Malt small seconds, Malt lady and a special Malte 100th anniversary edition have been designed and crafted to accentuate the fact that the form watch continues to hold a place of its own – one of exclusivity, originality and sophistication – within fine watch-making and to pursue its time-honoured vocation at Vacheron Constantin.

The Malte 100th Anniversary Edition is a limited edition watch. In 1912 when these timepieces were originally created they represented an authentic revolution in the field of horological design codes, almost entirely dominated at the time by the rounded shape typical of pocket watches, this model proved an immediate success among both men and women. It would take several years before form watches would assert themselves as a genuine alternative to classic timepieces, and a means of affirming the resolutely individual personality of their wearer. In celebration of this pioneering spirit, Vacheron Constantin created the Malte 100th Anniversary Edition model, a hand-wound watch issued in a 100-piece limited series. The watches in this Malte 100th Anniversary Edition, each individually numbered on the caseback, are fitted with a strap in blue Mississippiensis alligator leather, secured by a Malte cross-shaped buckle in 950 platinum.

With pure and refined lines these four variations are classic in terms of spirit, yet eminently contemporary when it comes to their style meeting the demands of today’s discerning customer. And with a limited edition in the mix, aficionados have all the more reason to visit a Vacheron Constantin boutique at the earliest!
